The Medical Professional Education Deanery (MPED), in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Department of General Surgery, Northwest General Hospital & Research Center (NWGH & RC), Peshawar, organized a One-Day Symposium on “VTE Study Roll-Out” on 19th June 2026.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is recognized globally as one of the leading preventable causes of hospital-related morbidity and mortality. Despite its clinical significance, studies conducted in Pakistan have highlighted considerable gaps in awareness, risk assessment, and the implementation of preventive measures among healthcare providers. Research has shown that only a small proportion of hospitalized patients undergo VTE risk assessment and receive appropriate prophylaxis. However, compliance improves significantly following structured educational and awareness interventions.

Keeping these challenges in view, the symposium was organized to familiarize healthcare professionals with the objectives and implementation strategy of the VTE Study and to reinforce the importance of evidence-based VTE prevention practices. The session focused on the burden of VTE, current preventive strategies, and the role of systematic risk assessment in improving patient outcomes.

The speakers emphasized that adherence to internationally recognized guidelines and standardized protocols can significantly reduce preventable complications and enhance patient safety. They also highlighted the importance of educational initiatives and multidisciplinary collaboration in improving compliance with VTE prophylaxis measures.

The symposium was attended by consultants, postgraduate trainees, and house officers from various specialties. Interactive discussions provided participants with valuable insights into VTE risk identification, prophylaxis protocols, and the practical implementation of the study within the hospital setting.

Through such academic and research-oriented initiatives, MPED, NWGH & RC continues to promote a culture of continuous professional development, evidence-based clinical practice, and excellence in patient care. The VTE Study Roll-Out represents an important step toward enhancing patient safety and advancing quality healthcare services in the region.
