NWGH Symposium: Obesity in Women’s Health

The Human Resource Department, Alliance Healthcare Private Limited, in collaboration with the Federal A One-Day Symposium on ‘Obesity in Women’s Health: Beyond Weight Management’

The Medical Professional Education Deanery (MPED), in collaboration with the Departments of OBGYN and Endocrinology, Northwest General Hospital & Research Centre (NWGH&RC), Peshawar, organized a one-day symposium on “Obesity in Women’s Health: Beyond Weight Management.”

The symposium opened an important window into a growing global health challenge. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 890 million adults were living with obesity in 2022, while 44% of adults worldwide were overweight. The burden is particularly relevant for Pakistan, where previous national data have reported central obesity in approximately 42.2% of women, compared with 14.7% of men.

Sharing their expertise, Prof. Dr. Sidra Jehangir and Dr. Arshad Hussain highlighted evidence-based approaches to obesity care and discussed how obesity can affect fertility, pregnancy, metabolic health, and long-term disease risk. The sessions emphasized that effective obesity management is not simply about losing weight; rather, it is about preventing complications, improving quality of life, and providing individualized and compassionate care.

The discussions further emphasized that obesity management should go beyond weight reduction. Early identification of risk, lifestyle modification, appropriate medical management, prevention of complications, and patient-centred care remain central to improving women’s health outcomes.

The symposium concluded with a powerful message: obesity is not simply a number on the weighing scale, it is about the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of women.

The event reflected MPED’s continued commitment to strengthening evidence-based medical education and professional development at NWGH&RC. Through regular scientific sessions and multidisciplinary learning opportunities, MPED continues to equip healthcare professionals with updated knowledge and practical insights that can be translated into better patient care and improved health outcomes.
