Radiation Oncology

Department
Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses beams of intense energy to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy may be curative in a number of types of cancers if they are diagnosed earlier and localized. It may also be used as part of curative therapy to prevent tumor recurrence after surgery. It can be used before, during and after chemotherapy in various types of cancers. It can also be offered for palliation in advanced or metastatic settings.

In the Radiation Oncology department at Northwest General Hospital & Research Centre, we have state-of-the-art, 6MV Medical Linear Accelerator, with well trained Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists and experienced technologists.

Radiation treatment is performed on Linear Accelerator with Electronic Portable Imaging Device (EPID) using Eclipse Planning System. Simulation is performed on Large Bore CT-Simulator with all range of immobilization devices. For Quality Assurance purpose the Department uses Portal Dosimetry for QA of IMRT plan. For machine QA there is a variety of equipment including 3D water phantom, QuickCheck, different ion chambers & electrometer.

NWGH is the first private hospital to offer radiotherapy facility in the K-P province. The Hospital also has one of the most distinguished centers in the country to offer Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), which is localized targeted radiotherapy with minimal toxicity to the normal structures around.

Department’s Facility/Services

Currently, the department provides 2DRT (Two-dimensional Radiation Therapy), 3DCRT (Three-dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy), Field in Field and IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy).

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses ionizing radiation of high-energy to kill cancer cells. It may be offered both in radical as well as palliative intent. In our department we have state-of-the-art medical linear accelerators with well-trained radiation oncologists, medical physicists and an experienced technologist. We provide 2DRY (Two-Dimensional Radiation Therapy), 3DCRY (Three Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy) and IMRY (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy).
